The right kind of success

LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein." (Psalm 24:1 KJV). Other passages speak to God's ownership of things we try to grip forever (Ezekiel 18:4-9).

When we understand that it is God who richly gives us all things to enjoy in this life, we are blessed by his presence in the gifts, talents, and vocations he gives us to be stewards over.

He is glorified when we acknowledge his Lordship over the stuff in our lives. The word success from God's view is found in the book of Joshua. It is a great and powerful example of apprenticeship.

It is watching the pupil (Joshua) watching the teacher (Moses) be successful in bringing approximately million people throughout the wilderness. Joshua saw first-hand the success Moses had with God.

Some skeptics who don't fully know God might view Moses as a failure because he wasn't able to enter the promised land. How narrow minded some people are.

That's like a starting quarterback taking his team to the Superbowl, but when coming out of the tunnel during introductions, he severely sprains his ankle and cannot play the game. Was he a failure or a success?

Even if the team loses, he still was successful in helping them get there. Moses was successful because of the words God spoke about him. Moses was a great servant of the Lord (Joshua 1:1-5).

9} "And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.

10} And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, (Deuteronomy 34:9-10 KJV).
Joshua was now ready to step into the leadership roll over Israel. God encouraged him along the way.

Joshua understood the key to having success in life is having God be fully in it. Please read these next verses aloud into your spirit and allow it to take deep root into your heart. You could frame these words in the family living room.

5} "There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

6} Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

7} Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.

8} This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

9} Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." (Joshua 1:5-9 KJV).

Praise God! If God be for us who can be against us, Amen! The world may see us as losers and unsuccessful, but in Jesus we are victorious and successful in everything we do.

The word success in verse eight is the Hebrew word (ώâkal-saw-kal'). It means to make someone circumspect and intelligent. To give insight and instruct expertise. To be prudent and wise. To understand and prosper.

So, when we dig just a little deeper into how Joshua was successful, we know that 1) God encouraged Joshua in that he would be with him, not fail him, and never leave him. The challenge was difficult, but God made it possible.

2) God told him to be strong and courageous. Many times, in life we need to hear that "raw-raw "that-a-boy" speech. When you feel overwhelmed about certain task ahead, trust God to strengthen and lead you.

3) God then repeats his words to Joshua to be strong. God had told him if you follow my laws and commandments, you will be prosperous and successful. Being successful requires following God in obedience.

4) Finally, God tells Joshua to meditate on his words continuously day and night. To be successful in this life, you can never take a break away from God. You must soak yourself in the Bible. His word is a lamp unto your feet and a light on your path.

And just so Joshua would fully grasp what God is saying, he commands him again, "Be strong, be courageous, don't be afraid, don't be discouraged, and that he would be with him through every step."

That sort of reminds me of how our parents watched over us as we learned to crawl and then support us when we tried to take our first steps. Good parents are there in a child's fragile learnings. Success follows through.

Our nation today still views success through a utopian lens that says in order to be successful you must grasp power, have influential personal contacts, and a relentless desire to get ahead.

But that way always ends in heartache and failure. How many stories of the rich and famous have ended up in disastrous lifestyles? Am I saying that having wealth means failure, of course not.

Many people in the Bible God allowed to accumulate wealth. But as I've told many in the body of Christ, "It's ok to have stuff, just don't allow the stuff to have you." It is the "love" of money that brings an evil root in your life.

Before we close for today, I wanted to give you an assignment to look into. It's really a question for you to do some reading and research on. Who was more successful in life, Solomon or John the Baptist? Be careful with your answer.

You can email or text me your answers whenever you like. As long as it's before next Sunday’s message. Did you know there is contentment in being successful? The Bible tells us through the servant Paul these words.

6} "But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7} For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8} And having food and raiment let us be therewith content." (1 Timothy 6:6-8 KJV).

When you read further, you see the unsuccessful failures Satan and the world can lead you into. (1 Timothy 6:9-10). Paul instructs Timothy to flee these traps and run after righteousness.

The writer in the book of Hebrews mentions contentment. Again, success without God is like having everything you want in life (all your possessions) while living in the middle of the Mojave Desert, without water.

There's a reason why they call it Death Valley. Some people may think the Apostle Paul's life mirrored a dry desert lifestyle. But Paul had a different explanation to those who thought he was out of his mind (Acts 26:1-25). What a successful testimony!

Today, much of the world considers power and prosperity to be the highest of goals. But God desires a different goal of success for his children. Yes, it is wonderful to see our children progress in achieving goals.

Children are like sponges. Their minds don't even fully develop until their mid-twenties. But the best way to see them succeed is to feed their physical mind and their spiritual mind.

Look at what Moses told the people explaining the conditions for entering the promised land. Please read (Deuteronomy 6:3-25) in your quiet time and read these verses aloud unto your children. This is the path of success.

When you specifically key in on verse 7-9, you see these verses are not just for Sunday. They are not just for the pastor or youth pastor to teach these verses to children. These are commands to the parents. Children are a gift from God.

It is the parent’s responsibility to point them in the direction of success. One day myself and a woman with a few children were discussing the most important values you can teach a child. She starting to name numerous rearing thoughts.

But after exhausting all her child rearing ideas, she left out a vital important one in life. At first, I was stunned a bit by her reluctance to know what she forgot. I told her she failed to mention "reading." She smirked at me and was silent.

She then said "Oh, that's for the school and teachers to teach my children to read. I told her “No, you are responsible for feeding the gift that was given to you." I also told her she was responsible for feeding them the word of God (The Bible).

I told her this can start while they are in the womb. Just as expectant mothers will sometimes sing lullabies to their babies in the womb, they can also read the living word into them.

[If you want your children to follow God, you must make him/her a part of your everyday experiences. You must teach your children diligently to see God in all aspects of life.]

🗣📢 Last words: If you feel your life has no meaning or direction, if you feel you have messed up your life, there is still a road to success. Many of you know about the two thieves crucified next to Jesus.

Would you believe one of them was successful? How so? Well, even though both may have lived a life of crime, one had a change of heart as he continued to focus on Jesus. He even was given the change to witness to the other thief.

When he told Jesus, "Remember me when you come into your Kingdom," he was given the assurance by Jesus that he would be in paradise with him. Isn't that success? Anytime your heart steps toward God, it can only lead to success.

God is the giver of our success in life. Whether it is abilities, skills, influence, and power. Every thing, every ability, and every position is God’s gift. If any person can do anything defined as “successful,” it is only because God has given him or her that ability.

The worlds values and God's values will always be divided. Please read (1John 2:15-17) to see why. Here are some closing scriptures to keep in your notes and in your heart as you continue to succeed in the hand of God.

Some of God's definition: (John 17:3; Psalm 16:11; 37:4; Luke 10:20; Philippians 4:13; Proverbs 3:1-5; 16:3; James 4:10; Jeremiah 29:11; 1 Kings 2:3; Isaiah 41:10; Romans 12:2; Deuteronomy 8:18).

(Philippians 4:6; Luke 16:10-11; Proverbs 3:3-4; Jeremiah 17:7; Ecclesiastes 5:3; Habakkuk 2:3; Psalm 118:25). [Biblical success that pleases and glorifies God is being known by him and knowing and serving him through faith in Jesus Christ and his gospel.]

So, if you desire to engage in direct and meaningful communication with God, and want to hear his voice in your spirit,  then begin to seek him in prayer and reading his word. He will guide you into success.

Charlie Brown said it this way, "In the book of life, the answers aren’t in the back." "Learn from yesterday, live for today, look to tomorrow, rest this afternoon."

Remember my friends, “When life knocks you down, try to land on your back, because if you can look up, you can get up.”

🛐 Here’s a prayer you can pray to grasp success out of failure. "Heavenly Father, thank you for this informative encouraging word today. It seems I have been locked up in the prison of failure far too long.

It seems every step I take ends in hurt, pain, and disaster. But I found out today that if I let go and let God be Lord over my life, he can make beauty out of my ashes. Lord, I am ready to follow you through every valley.

I know that there will still be bumps in the road, in the past I tried to smooth out those bumps and repair those wide potholes myself. But now I can simply cast them to you and watch you fix what's broken.

Lord, today I seek your blessings for success in all my striving, help me to excel in my work, studies, marriage and relationships in every area of my life. Give me favor with others and open doors of opportunity.

Guide me towards success and bless the work of my hands. Lord, any success you give me will in turn bring you the glory you so deserve, In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen."
