Have you ever felt like the more you tried to dig yourself out of something, that something got deeper and wider? It seems our choices, consequences, and challenges end up engulfing us further in them.

 

In most cases, we didn't start out this way, but we thought we could dig our way out of these mounting situations. No one likes to dig their own problems to fall in. Many who fall deep into life's struggles, need help to get out.

The two men on this page found themselves making a statement, and asking a question, "Remember me," and "What must I do to be saved?" It makes you stop and think when life seems to be headed toward finality.

The first man in (Luke 23:32-47), found out that his life of crime came to sudden dead-end, literally. But as he came to realize his life hung in the balance, he had a true change of heart.

The other criminal was only concerned about self-preservation. Life goes beyond the jail cell. The repentant criminal found out it is never too late to turn to God. You are extremely valuable to God no matter how others see you.

The other man in (Acts 16:25-34), was not a criminal, but he worked in the penal system guarding prisoners. The pressures he faced with being held accountable for the slightest mishap or escape of one prisoner meant certain death for a jailer during his time.

You see my beloved brother or sister, great compassion, mercy, and love showed up in both scenes when life is destitute and in need of help. Verse 25 in Acts 16 is the key to the prison episode.

The earthquake was not intended to deliver Paul but to convert the jailer. This is why the jailer ran to Paul asking how to be saved. The earthquake would have been meaningless had not the jailer and prisoners heard Paul’s testimony.

in prayer and song. The criminal on the cross would not have had a change of heart had he listened to the other thief. God’s purpose of deliverance for the jailer and Jesus' words of forgiveness ensured salvation for both men.

Beloved brother or sister, please know your past problems do not define your future, and your current circumstances cannot limit the depth of God's love or the purpose he has for your life.

Even in the quietest, darkest moments, you are never truly alone, forgotten, or beyond the reach of grace. Even in the isolation and challenges of a facility, you are never truly alone, forgotten, or beyond the reach of God's grace.

Why would you reject it if it's good for you? When you recognize Jesus as Lord and trust in him with your entire life, you receive salvation. If you have never trusted in Jesus to save you, do so right now! Your life can be filled with joy, just like the jailer and the criminal on the cross.
